Police in Texas arrested a man on Saturday they say was connected to the death of a 16-year-old cheerleader.
Police in Edna said Rafael Govea Romero was arrested in Schulenburg, taken to the Jackson County Jail and charged with capital murder. According to police, Romero is undocumented.
Edna is a small town in southeast Texas near the Gulf of Mexico, about 100 miles southwest of Houston and 140 miles southeast of San Antonio.
Romero is charged in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina, an Edna High School student who was found dead on Dec. 5 by her mother in a bathtub inside of their apartment. Her cause of death has not been publicly released.
Medina and her mother, Jacqueline Medina, had only lived in Edna for about a year, according to KHOU 11. She said her daughter, who was her only child, was meant to be involved with her cheer squad in the Christmas parade, but never made it there.
"Although Romero is apprehended, we recognize Lizbeth's family and friends are grieving and will still need support from the community," Edna Police Chief Rick Boone said in a release.
